Last February, a young boy from Afghanistan asked Sandy, his Good Neighbor volunteer, to explain a Valentine’s Day card to him.
“I told him that we give cards to people that we love, and he said to me, ‘Then I should give that card to you.’ It melted my heart,” said Sandy.
Sandy and a team of volunteers from St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie started walking alongside an Afghan single father and his four children 15 months ago.
We love them like we love our own families! We have a lot of women on the team, and we each have acted in part as surrogate moms for these kids.”
The team and family have celebrated major holidays and birthdays together. The first time one of the boys’ birthdays was celebrated with a cake and candles he was overcome with emotion repeating, “I’m not crying, I’m not crying.”
Any time I talk about this experience, I am overwhelmed with humility and awe by God’s amazing love and provision. It’s God’s work, our hands and hearts.”
