Dave and Sandy had already spent eight years befriending the Somali community through our Somali Adult Literacy Training (SALT) program when the pandemic hit.
They were always wondering what they could do for us. It felt like being part of their family.
Contact was limited, but 86-year-old Dave and his wife Sandy’s Somali friends in East St. Paul checked in on them regularly.

86-year-old Dave and Sandy have helped Somali friends with language, citizenship, drivers licenses, and more.
“They have a lot of deference for old people in their culture,” Dave says. “My hair is pretty snow white, and it’s hard to hide.”
They’re good people. I’d put my life in their hands if I had to.
Sandy and Dave are a good team; Dave helps the men, and Sandy works with the women.
Dave’s words clearly describe his missional heart, full of love, trust, and respect for the people he seeks to serve.
“I’m sure (the Somalis) would do as much as they could for us. They’re good people. I’d put my life in their hands if I had to,” said Dave.
