Joking in English

December 7, 2022

Our Employment counselor, Briana took a female Afghan client to the airport for a job interview. While going through the security line, Briana took her keys out of her pocket and as an aside told the young woman that as a little girl she used to think people with a lot of keys were very important.

It was such a joy to share in her sense of humor, and to see her stretch her English capabilities to include comedy

Later in the afternoon, as the two women walked past an airport janitor, the Afghan client pointed to the janitor and in English said, “He must be a very important person.”

At first Briana was confused and thought they were crossing wires due to a language barrier, until Briana realized that her client was making a joke about the janitor’s many keys!

“This was the first time one of my clients who was learning to speak English made a joke to me in English. It was such a joy to share in her sense of humor, and to see her stretch her English capabilities to include comedy,” said Briana.
