Sharing Jesus with our Somali neighbors through literacy and friendship
What is Somali Adult Literacy Training (SALT)?
Our Somali neighbors have escaped civil war violence and extreme hardship in refugee camps. Now they are learning English, how to survive Minnesota weather and to thrive in our economy.
Make an Impact as a SALT Volunteer
Join us, with the love of Jesus, in welcoming our new neighbors. Consider meeting with a Somali man or woman once a week to build friendships as you help them learn English and achieve other goals like citizenship and employment. Your job is to learn their name, their family, their story and their goals. As you pray and coach them in literacy and English, you will help them become successful. In turn, you will share your story and have the joy of seeing their life and your own transformed.
Teams of teachers and tutors are led by site coordinators in multiple Twin Cities and greater Minnesota locations. Visit the outreach site most convenient for you. Shadow an experienced tutor before making a six month commitment. Also, we would love to connect you with friends doing similar work in Marshall and Pelican Rapids MN, Barron WI, Des Moines IA, Sioux Falls SD, Kansas City MO, Seattle WA and beyond! Michael Neterer, Director of Somali Adult Literacy Training
The original plan for SALT was developed as an academic exercise while Michael attended the Summer Institute of Linguistics, “MegaLiteracy Course,” at the University of North Dakota in 2003. Recently Michael finished an MA in Organizational Management at Concordia University in St. Paul. SALT’s ESL workbook can be purchased through Arrive Ministries
Seven years in development, the newly revised Somali-English ABC Book is now available. This book is designed for Somali adults who may have never gone to school, who are learning the alphabet, and reading for the first time in their lives. Somali parents are also using the book to teach their children Somali language and culture. In turn, Somali children can help their parents with English.
Each lesson starts in Somali (with translations for the English-speaking tutor’s benefit), then bridges to English. This approach works because Somali and English share essentially the same alphabet. Each page has pictures to aid comprehension. Each lesson has a verse from the Bible, in both English and Somali, highlighting the key word and truth on which Muslims and Christians agree.
