When the Taliban puts a bounty on Afghan director Hassan Fazili’s head, he is forced to flee the country with his wife and two young daughters. Capturing the family’s uncertain journey firsthand, Fazili documents their harrowing trek across numerous borders shooting the entire thing using 3 cells phones over a few years.

This highly-acclaimed film reveals the danger and uncertainty facing refugees seeking asylum juxtaposed with the unbreakable love shared amongst the family on the run.

The filmmakers are chronicling their own lives, of course. But they are also documenting a far larger catastrophe, one that comes in different languages and affects innumerable families. It’s easy to feel upset and recurrently outraged by what you see and hear. But at its best, this documentary asks something more of you.” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Invite your friends and neighbors to see this urgent film that will truly change the way we think about the word “refugee” forever. A Q & A with local Afghans will be held after the screening.
Recommended for children 10 and older, due to one reference to subtitled profanity.

Accolades:

  • Winner World Cinema Special Jury Award 2019 Sundance Film Festival
  • “A documentary that feels like a modern-day message in a bottle, an urgent appeal for help from a family that’s still searching for a home.” – Scott Tobias, Variety
  • “A work of uncommon immediacy and raw emotional power… This is cinema, and when it’s over, we miss our time with these fascinating, vibrant souls.” – Christopher Llewellyn Reed, Hammer to Nail
  • “A call to action… a story of love persevering against all odds, and a visceral, real-life thriller.” – Alex Saveliev, Film Threat
  • “This affecting, essential documentary is shot entirely on three phones, spanning several years… It’s a remarkable achievement.” – Wendy Ide, ScreenDaily
  • “Full of social and political urgency… heartfelt and heartbreaking.” – Caryn James, The Hollywood Reporter
  • “A film about a family, about the hardship and inhumanity they have endured, about their bravery, about their love, about their hope, and, above all else – about their desire to be safe, and in control of their lives, and bodies, and destinies, and fates.” – Gary Garrison, The Playlist
  • “Effectively stateless by the time the movie begins, the family is a tiny unmoored ship searching for harbor. You are a witness to the manifold difficulties of its odyssey — the complicated logistics, the thrum of menace and the tedious waiting, captured in very rough visuals.” – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
